The opening activity of the second cycle was a conference entitled “Democracy, Human Rights and the Rule of Law in Latin America.” The event was held as part of the ICGDE’s 15th anniversary celebrations, at its premises in Puebla’s University City.
Speakers, moderation and organisation
The conference featured contributions by Nancy Hernández López, former President and Judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights; Mariela Morales Antoniazzi, Principal Researcher at the MPIL and Coordinator of the Ius Constitutionale Commune in Latin America (ICCAL) project; José de Jesús Orozco Henríquez, Researcher at the Institute for Legal Research of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); and Rocío C. Flores Calderón, Coordinator of the institutional collaboration between the MPIL and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
The session was moderated by Leonardo Valdés Zurita, Secretary for Research and Postgraduate Studies at ICGDE-BUAP. Overall coordination was led by Rocío C. Flores Calderón, while the event was organised by the Centre for Political Studies (CEPOL-ICGDE) and the Academic Body “Democratic Dynamics and Public Policies.”
A chair based on interinstitutional cooperation
The International Chair on Human Rights brings together the judicial experience of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, the academic research carried out at the MPIL, particularly within the framework of the ICCAL project, and BUAP’s educational work.
The collaboration between BUAP and the MPIL has a well-established history. Together with UNAM and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, both institutions contributed to the preparation of the foundational volume of the ICCAL project, published in 2016.
During the conference, Nancy Hernández López highlighted the potential of this initiative to help students understand human rights not only as a normative framework, but also as a tool for understanding and transforming reality.
