On 18 June 2026, Armin von Bogdandy, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL), and Mariela Morales Antoniazzi, Principal Researcher at the Institute and Coordinator of the Ius Constitutionale Commune in Latin America (ICCAL) project, accepted an invitation from Daniel Kriener, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Costa Rica, to meet at the Embassy in San José.

Daniel Kriener has served as Germany’s Ambassador to Costa Rica since August 2022. During his tenure, the Embassy has reaffirmed the two countries’ shared commitment to international law: “Germany and Costa Rica enjoy a long-standing and fruitful friendship. We will continue working together for peace, for international law and to safeguard the future of our planet.”

Meeting within the framework of the Inter-American agenda

The meeting with Ambassador Kriener took place on the same day that von Bogdandy and Morales Antoniazzi participated in the farewell seminar for Pablo Saavedra Alessandri, organised by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

The reception at the Embassy highlighted the connection between the MPIL’s academic engagement in the region and Germany’s diplomatic presence in Costa Rica. It also provided an opportunity for exchange on the relationship between legal research, international cooperation, human rights and the rule of law in Latin America.
